Contextual and historical studies introductory study visit.

Sara Fanelli, Tate Artist Timeline

Hey folks, just a post to let you know that the timeline I was using last Friday to aid with our Modernist umbrella is now on MyUCA in the Contextual Studies folder [on the left hand side towards the bottom]. The timeline will give you some sense of the great period of technological, political and societal changes and flux that took place from 1750's - 1940's.

Also here is a link to the Tate Glossary I mentioned the other day. It provides a good overview of art terms, including -ism's.

Remember art and design is not made in a vacuum but is influenced from the world we inhabit.

The Jerwood Space

this was done on a type writer, loads of little dots, loved it...
This is Grafite on card, that is my reflection at the bottom right...very cool....

 Can`t turn this round grrrrrr........

This was an amazing projection :-) Didn`t catch the artists name..

Hi everyone, After David precluded that he thought the usual way I express myself through art was Drawing!! Oooeer, when I have had mainly a `hate` relationship with the concept of drawing full stop. I then felt inspired to go to the Jerwood Space that was holding a Drawing Competition. It was lovely, I felt at home there as soon as I walked in. Their was a young lady doing a presentation about her charcoal Animation. It was amazing, She was an award winner. Here are some pics of other pieces that caught my eye......

Me, Myself and I

'Experimentation is the test of all knowledge' - Richard Feynman

To follow up from our session last Friday and a gentle reminder that you are expected to be developing an experimental body of work which explores notions surrounding the your identity.

Experimentation is the the key word here, we are expecting you all to produce an experimental body of work using all the materials, media and techniques you have been exposed to thus far as well as any existing skills you have.

Through this experimental process and in conjunction with your own personal research, reflection and evaluation of your ideas and work produced you will gain a deeper understanding of who you are.

Remember the point Ash made about exploring your ideas through practical experimentation in your sketchbook. Experimentation will inspire and suggests further exploratory work and conceptual areas that you should research.

buy Eye Spy by Fiona White art online

I went to the Brick Lane Gallery at the weekend. There was a collective show on and I was particularly struck by the paintings of Fiona White. She is Australian. Her subjects are largely people but they are quite stylised  almost iconographic. Very simple and very powerful.

Some brief further research has revealed that she won the Blake Prize for Human Justice. See an interview about her winning painting on http://www.blakeprize.com/news/human-justice-prize-winner-fiona-white.

I did find this article interesting and it is a Blog too!
OK, I have managed to comment on a blog and I have wasted hours of my life looking for blogs, but I am still not able to find one that interests me. All the artists and galleries I follow are on Face Book.
The list is long and getting longer by the day.
If anyone wants to be my friend on Face Book and see who I follow then I would love to "Friend You"!
My Face Book names is Alison Fleming Saunders and I have a photo of myself with pink birthday balloons so I am fairly easy to find.
Have a great weekend
Alison

I was looking on the net for some more information on Giuseppe Penone. I came across a book about him in the Library (Giuseppe Penone - Sculpture di linfa) which was all in Italian. The images are wonderful. He uses largely natural materials, changing nature but working with it. For examples look at this link

does this last one make you think of this?

Anyway - when looking for Giuseppe I found a really good article by James Croak - Trees a Crowd -  on artists who use nature as their inspiration. Now given me a load of new people to look at. Brilliant!
As we are all looking at exhibitions - you should not forget those on the doorstep in Farnham. Right at UCA is the Craft Study Centre and there is a new exhibition starting there next week by Alison Britton - ceramics (for pictures see this link). There is also the New Ashgate in Wagon Yard (near the Church). This is a small commercial gallery but it does try and nurture links with UCA. At the end of the summer term last academic year they ran a show for promising young artists who were UCA graduates and also a series of talks aimed at helping graduates get their professional lives launched. So it is worth getting to know.

William Klein at Tate Modern

10th October 2012 - 20th January 2013

One of the main things that struck me walking round the opening of the William Klein and Daido Moriyama was the fact that this show had been largely promoted as the latest in the Tate's series of blockbuster 'photography' exhibitions. Klein is not simply a photographer, and it was this that remained with me whilst I viewed the works, discussed the content and range of output with other viewers. This approach and view of being an artist is one that resonates with me. Klein has the confidence to try things out and to not be pigeon-holed into being thought of as one kind of artist.

An artist, painter, film maker, designer and photographer are some of the things that Klein could be described as for in his works there is evidence of his investigation into all these approaches to making work. Not content to be a painter (though this was his original training with the late great Fernand Leger), Klein has spent his career pushing the boundaries of every medium he has chosen to embrace producing a body of work that is varied, rich and expressive - whilst being both a document of the city he has lived in (New York) and a means of expressive artistic outpouring.

In some of his early paintings on wooden panels 1951 - 1954 (below), Klein has explored the 'use of typography as an abstract motif...' which '...is echoed in his fascination with advertising and other street signage' (from Tate catalogue) and it is obvious from his experimental film 'Broadway by light' from 1958 just how much the environment and vivid colours inspire and inform his work.

In these later works Klein has begun to apply paint directly to the surfaces of his contact sheets, again inspired by an experiment where he enlarged the contact sheets and accentuated the 'grease' pencil marks normally used in the editing and selecting process. Klein describes the inspiration behind his ‘painted’ contact sheets saying

‘I saw the possibility of inventing a new kind of art object by marrying organically, not arbitrarily, painting and photography. When I started painting the contacts, it was all jubilation. The jubilation of painting recalled the celebration of taking the photo. For me, taking a photo was a celebration, was physical and gave me a super charge’. (Tate catalogue)

The last two images here show some examples of covers that Klein designed for the Italian architectural magazine DOMUS in the 1950's. These experimental covers were developed from a series of photograms that Klein made and using simple stencils and colour was able to create these bold, innovative and memorable designs.

This exhibition is a must see for any Visual Communicator (Artist Graphic Designer, Photographer or Illustrator) interested in imagery, text, the book-format and film.
